The Man From Snowy River - Banjo's Poem

A favourite Poem in Australia is "The Man From Snowy River", and a contact here posted the video yesterday. The scenes are from the movie of the same name.

  1. Banjo Patterson also wrote Waltzing Matilda which I think of often when I think of Australia.

    WALTZING MATILDA

Once a jolly swagman camped beside a billabong,
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he sat and waited while his billy boiled,
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

    CHORUS
    Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And he sang as he sat and waited while his billy boiled,
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

Down came a jumpbuck to drink at the billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he stowed that jumback in his tuckerbag,
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

Up came the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred
Down came the troopers - one, two, three,
"Where's that jolly jumpbuck you've got in your tuckerbag?
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me"

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,
"You'll never take me alive!", said he.
And his ghost may be heard as you pass beside that billabong,
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

  3. I haven't thought of Waltzing Matilda for years. When I was 7 or 8 my school had bazaar. There was a draw for a beautiful doll, all you had to do was guess her name. I guessed Matilda and won.

Thanks for the kind words Jan,

  4. Well I'm glad you won the doll and the thoughts of it remind you of Australia.
All the best for a very pleasant week.

  5. I watched the clip all the way through and there are some spectacular shots. The reader started his career with a band "OL55" and he has been in TV dramas and Movies in Australia since then.
