Musical Instruments
What would the world be without music? I love all kinds of music and am fascinated by all the different instruments there are. Do you have a favourite type of music, favourite musical instrument, do you play an instrument? Share your musical stories here with us and help make the world go round with music!

A few years ago my youngest daughter Kendra and I used to volunteer for the Francophone Association for the Nanaimo Maple Sugar Festival here in Nanaimo and this is where I was introduced to "Spoons".
ReplyDeleteThe history of musical spoons goes back as far as does the history of the spoon. Cultures from Russia to Ireland to Native American cultures have a history of playing the spoons or spoon-shaped bones. Some people think the playing of the bones was part of a spiritual tradition that loosed the spirit of the animal, or channeled the animal's positive spiritual benefits.
Generally speaking, in traditional French-Canadian music, you'll have a fiddler, a spoon-player and a vocalist. The accordion and harmonica are also fairly common, as are the piano and guitar. Finally, the ensemble is is usually completed by percussive dancing, clapping, foot tapping, hooting and hollering. ;-)
Please take a moment to enjoy this U-Tube video that hopefully demonstrates to you how wonderful this folk music is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9pMIcRlLvw

ReplyDeleteVery interesting Sharon, I will have to think about it.
ReplyDeleteOur house is full of musical instruments.... 4 or 5 guitars, pianoaccordian, 2 mandolins, 2 ukeleles, banjos, numerous tin whistles and mouthorgans (harmonicas), 2 keyboards and we gave one away, and my harp, and percussion instruments... lagerphone, sticks, maracas and tambourine. The sticks would be equivalent to the spoons in our indigenous heritage.
ReplyDeleteBut we don't play many CDs or DVDs, Barry is always singing and practising something.
I like Gospel myself... Gaither, Anthony Burger, Guy Penrod, and Foster and Allen, Isla Grant and Celtic Woman.
I have seen the 'spoons' played with actual spoons.... but not this instrument in the clip.
